The Law of Attraction - The 7 Biggest Myths Debunked
The Law of Attraction has received a great deal of media attention in recent years. Thanks to the movie The Secret and the subsequent explosion of television, print media and internet coverage, nearly everyone in Western society has heard the phrase "Law of Attraction". Most people, however, have picked up snippets and incomplete information here and there and don't really have a solid understanding of how the law works.
This has led to a widespread misunderstanding of how the Law of Attraction really works, or whether or not it even works at all. A lot of people feel a deep resonance when they are told that they create their own reality. They recognize a truth in this idea. However, they often quickly become frustrated when they're exposed to incomplete information and myths, and can't seem to make it work. They "know" that there's something to this, they can feel it; but they just don't know how to use it yet.
This article aims to debunk the seven biggest myths currently circulating about the Law of Attraction and bring some clarity to the subject.
Myth #1: The Law of Attraction is magic
The Myth: "Law of Attraction advocates will tell you that all you have to do is think positively and the stuff you want will just come to you. Obviously this is wrong, since things like money, cars and houses don't just appear out of thin air."
The Myth Debunked: No one with a true understanding of the Law of Attraction has ever claimed that if you just think a positive thought, a house with a million dollars on the kitchen table and a Ferrari in the driveway will just drop out of the sky right in front of you. This is usually a quote used by people trying to claim that the Law of Attraction is a scam. But the quote isn't true. That isn't how the Law of Attraction works at all.
The Law of Attraction doesn't just literally drop stuff in your lap. It brings you meetings with just the right people at the right time, brilliant ideas and coincidences. It's your job to pay attention to those ideas, follow your hunches and recognize the coincidences.
For example, you'd like to manifest a house. The Law of Attraction gives you an insight to drive through a certain neighborhood that you don't normally drive through. You see a house with a For Sale sign in the yard. The house looks perfect, except you're pretty sure it's completely out of your price range. You decide to stop and knock on the door anyway. It turns out the owners are a lovely couple who are moving to Australia in a month. You and they really hit it off and they decide to offer you rent to own terms that you can afford. They really want you to live there. So, you get the perfect house at a price you're able to pay, under circumstances that you never could've predicted. Did it drop right into your lap? Well, not literally, no. But if you paid attention and followed the insights and impulses the Universe was delivering to you, it could've seemed almost as easy as if it had. THIS is how the Law of Attraction brings you things. It finds whatever you're looking for that is also looking for you and brings you together through a series of perfect events, insights and hunches.
Myth #2 - All you have to do is visualize
The Myth: "The Law of Attraction is just about visualization. That's why they tell you to create vision boards and the like. You're supposed to stare at the things you want and they will just come to you (see Myth #1)"
The Myth Debunked: This one is partially true. Visualization can be a valuable tool you use to train yourself to create what you want. It isn't the visualization that creates, though. You create through the vibration that you offer. The vibration you offer is determined by the thoughts you habitually think (beliefs). Visualization can help you to retrain your thoughts, but there's much more to it than that. If you visualize a beautiful car, but have the belief that you'll never get a car like that, you can visualize all day, every day, and that car's not going to show up. How do you know if you harbor a conflicting belief? You can tell by the way you feel when you visualize. If it feels really, really good to visualize the car, and the entire visualization is positive, you're doing well. If, however, it feels a bit off and your visualization takes a bit of a negative turn, you've just uncovered some negative beliefs.
For example, you wonder how you'll afford the payments, which would point to a belief that states "I can't afford a new car"; or you might hope your kids don't mess up the beautiful new seats, which could point to a belief that you can't have nice things and they always get ruined, so, why bother anyway...
Visualization is a valuable tool in manifestation, but it isn't the creation process itself.
Visualization is a valuable tool in manifestation, but it isn't the creation process itself.
Myth #3 - The Law of Attraction is new
The Myth: "If the Law of Attraction is really a law, why hasn't anyone discovered it before? This is just some new fad."
The Myth Debunked: The Law of Attraction isn't new. It's been around since the beginning of, well, everything. It can be argued that it's the oldest law in the Universe. The reason that so many people are hearing about it now, is because more and more people are waking up and realizing, or at least getting a glimpse of, who they really are. More people are asking for this information than ever before, and therefore, the Law of Attraction must bring them more answers than ever before. There are more books written on this subject than we've ever seen. Thanks to the internet, people can find answers to their questions immediately.
The information is not "new"; we are simply asking for and able to receive more information, and at a faster rate than ever before. Also, we are living in a time where most of us can discuss spiritual matters and Universal laws openly without fear of being burned at the stake or stoned to death. All of this has allowed the idea of the Law of Attraction to spread at an unprecedented rate.
Myth #4 - The Law of Attraction is Non-Christian
Myth #4 - The Law of Attraction is Non-Christian
The Myth: "I am a Christian and therefore I cannot believe in the Law of Attraction. This is just a bunch of New-Agey stuff that conflicts with Christian beliefs"
The Myth Debunked: This one could not be further from the truth. There are hundreds of passages in the Bible that refer to the Law of Attraction. Some of these verses can be traced back almost 3000 years. Jesus said "Everything is possible to him who believes." And "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do..." Here are few more: "As a man thinketh, so he is." (Proverbs 23:7). "It is through thinking that man forms that which he has in life". (Proverbs 23:7). "For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened." (Matthew 7:8)
These, and many other proverbs just like them, support the principle that your thoughts create your reality and you can create anything you want. The point is that Christianity and the Law of Attraction are not based on inherently conflicting principles. There are actually now internet sites on the web dedicated to the study of the Law of Attraction from a Christian point of view.
Myth #5 - I have to do something to make the Law of Attraction "work"
The Myth: "You have to know how to use the Law of Attraction in order to get it to work. If it isn't working for you, you must be doing it wrong."
The Myth Debunked: This is another myth that is based on a complete misunderstanding of how the Law of Attraction works. There is nothing you have to do, or in fact can do to make the Law of Attraction work. Just as there is nothing you have to do or can do to make gravity work. It just works. That's why it's called a law.
You create your own reality. All of it. All the time. You can't help it. You're a lean, mean, creating machine. Everything you see around you, every person in your life, everything in your reality, is there in response to the vibration you offer. There's nothing you have to do to make that process work, nor can you stop it. That's why no one can claim that "it isn't working for you." It can't NOT work for you.
The problem arises when people are creating by default, which often brings them things they don't really want, instead of creating deliberately. Your job is to remember how to create consciously, to remember just how powerful you really are. That's it. And it's not supposed to be hard work. It's supposed to be fun. If you're not having fun, THEN you're doing it wrong.
Myth #6 - Thoughts are dangerous. You have to control every thought you think.
The Myth: "You have to control every thought you think. If you think a 'negative' thought, or have a fear of something, you automatically create that. So watch every thought you think!"
The Myth Debunked: While it's true that every thought has the power to create, there are two big reasons why you don't have to be afraid of your thoughts.
First, one little thought doesn't have all that much power. The power comes from thinking the same thought over and over again, until it's a belief. The more you think a thought and believe it, the more it affects your vibration and it's this vibration that attracts your manifestations. The Law of Attraction responds to your vibration, not the words you've said or thought (although notice that your words and thoughts can affect your vibration).
Second, we have this amazing thing called time. There is a time buffer between offering a vibration and receiving a manifestation. And while many of us often curse this time buffer in our impatience to receive the things we want, it is incredibly useful. Things don't happen immediately for a reason. You have time to notice if you're harboring any conflicting beliefs or are offering a vibration that doesn't really serve you.
For example, if you're driving down the street and have a random thought "I hope I don't get in an accident", you might remember reading somewhere that the Universe and your subconscious don't understand negative statements, and you just put "I hope I get in an accident" out there. So, obviously you'd better suck that thought right back in, or else you'll have an accident. Wrong. If you have the thought "I hope I don't get in an accident" but you don't harbor an underlying belief that driving is dangerous and there's a very good chance that you'll get in an accident, your vibration is not going to even begin to match you up with an accident. If your underlying belief is "I'm safe", you'll be safe.
If, however, you do harbor such a belief, formed by many, many thoughts about how you're a victim, how easy it is to get into accidents, how driving is dangerous, reading lots of news stories about how people get in accidents all the time, talking about those stories, etc., that one little thought has just given you an indication that you have an underlying belief. Do you think these thoughts often and easily? Then you might want to do something about that (or buckle up). The point is, that even though your thoughts help to form your vibration, which creates your reality, it is the vibration behind the thought you have to pay attention to. A random thought that means nothing to you isn't going to create a thing. But a thought that you believe and think over and over again, a thought you give lots of attention to, will affect your vibration and that will create.
Myth #7 - The Law of Attraction just teaches selfishness
The Myth: "The Law of Attraction teaches people to focus on themselves and how they feel, before focusing on others. This is selfish, and that's bad. We have a duty to be selfless."
The Myth Debunked: This myth and the belief that we must be selfless, have caused more burnout among people with great intentions than anything else.
The Law of Attraction does teach selfishness. But selfishness has gotten a really bad rap. There's a huge difference between walking over bodies to get what you want, which is what many people think of when they hear the word "selfish", and not allowing circumstances and other people to dictate your happiness. Giving of yourself with no regard to how you feel until there's nothing left but an empty husk, is neither virtuous nor necessary. The choices are not just between being a self-sacrificing saint or a complete bastard.
The selfishness that the Law of Attraction teaches, is the kind that allows a mother with three little kids to recognize when she's becoming overwhelmed, and give herself permission to take a hot bath and recharge her batteries, without feeling guilty about it. She comes back refreshed and in a better mood. Do you think this will harm or benefit her children? If we take care of ourselves (physically, psychologically AND spiritually), we have so much more to give others. If we focus on our own joy, we can uplift others, and truly help them, instead of commiserating with them in their misery and just supporting them in their being stuck in that vibration.
The more selfish we are, the more joyful we become, the stronger and more unyielding we stand in our vibration of happiness, the more we have to give others, and the more we can give to others without depleting ourselves. True selfishness is the best thing we can do for the world.

Law of Vibration - The Key To Understanding The Law of Attraction

Of all the universal laws, the law of attraction is both the most fascinating and the most misunderstood. Fascinating, because as humans we naturally want a tool to help create the life of our dreams, and the law of attraction can certainly help us to do that. Misunderstood because, unlike a tool that we can pull out and use now and again but is otherwise inactive, the law of attraction is operating in our lives constantly and independently, whether we are consciously aware of it, or believe in it, or not.
In other words, there is no need to engage the law of attraction, it is already at work in your life and always will be. So long as you are alive and breathing, the law of attraction is at work. This is great news! You are already using the law of attraction to create everything in your life whether you realise it or not. The results that you are experiencing: your career, finances, relationships, health, home, community, and so on, are a direct result of the law of attraction and your interaction with it in the form of thoughts and feelings.
If you're not creating the kind of life you want though, chances are you are creating by default, allowing the law of attraction to bring you more and more of the same. Unfortunately, we weren't handed a life manual at birth and, for many of us, our parents were not aware of the law of attraction and so did not teach us. At Attract Like Magic we are dedicated to helping you understand this powerful universal law and how you can begin to use the law of attraction to consciously create the life of your dreams. On the Attract Like Magic site, and in upcoming newsletters and articles, we will explore everything to do with the law of attraction and provide tools that will help you to harness its power.
But in order to really understand the law of attraction, you first need to understand another of the universal laws, the law of vibration.
Law of Vibration
According to the law of vibration everything is made of energy and has a distinct frequency or vibration. With the advent of powerful enough technology, science now agrees. Quantum physicists have shown that, although matter may appear to be solid, when you look at it through a high-powered microscope so that it is broken down into its smallest components: molecules, atoms, neutrons, electrons and quanta (the smallest particles measurable), it is ultimately mostly empty space interspersed with energy.
In other words, at the quantum level, everything is comprised of energy and empty space and what makes you, your home, your car, the chair you're sitting in, seem solid is the frequency of the vibration of the energy that makes it up.
Not only does your body and all that you consider to be "you" have a distinct and unique vibration (or more correctly a mix of vibrations), but your creations, in the form of thoughts, also have distinct vibrations which affect or blend with your overall vibration.
In turn, your vibrations affect everything around you - your environment, the people and animals around you, the inanimate objects, even the seemingly 'empty' space and they, in turn, affect you. That's why, when you walk into a room where there was an earlier argument, you can sense it. We even use terms like "bad vibes", "you can feel the tension", and "you could cut the air in here with a knife" to describe it. In each case what we are referring to is the energy imprint of the earlier occupants.
Similarly, you may have gone to someone's home, office or business where, as soon as you entered, you felt the "good vibes" that filled the place. That's because, over time, a place becomes imbued with the energy imprints of the dominant vibrations of the people who live or work there. So a home, for example, can literally become filled with love or tension or anger or sadness or any other emotion, and that home will feel that way to a visitor even if none of the regular occupants are at home at the time. If you've ever entered such a place you may even have noticed how you just relaxed and felt good in response to the "good vibes" around you. Of course, the extent to which you take on the vibrations of the people and things around you is up to you - but for most people, this is not a conscious decision.
So, you are giving off vibrations every second of every day. You are also simultaneously receiving and translating the vibrations of everything and everyone around you. If we use the analogy of television, you are both a television transmitter, beaming out your own unique station, and also a television set or receiver, able to tune in to all the stations or frequencies being broadcast around you. Sometimes we refer to these incoming vibrations as intuition or "gut feelings".
So how do you know what your vibration is at any moment?
Simple - ask yourself how you are feeling.
Your emotions are a quick and handy guide to your vibration in any moment. If you feel loving, you are vibrating at the frequency of love; if you feel angry, you are vibrating at the frequency of anger; if you feel curious, you are vibrating at the frequency of curiosity, and those vibrations are received by everything and everyone around you. You are also, through the law of attraction, bringing to you more experiences that will match this vibration so when you feel angry the law of attraction will bring to you more experiences that will elicit the feeling of anger, you will attract angry people and find yourself in the middle of angry situations.
Have you ever had a day where you felt lousy, but tried to pretend that everything was OK to family, friends or co-workers? It doesn't work does it? Your friends, family or co-workers know straight away that you are not how you are pretending to be. They may ask if something is wrong, or comment that you don't seem to be your normal self. They pick up on the incongruence between what you are saying and your vibration. Because we are not used to explaining in terms of vibrations, they may attribute their knowing to something more mundane like tone of voice or body language, but even people without the full use of their senses can detect this type of incongruence.
To sum up, you are sending out vibrations every moment of every day. Those vibrations are a mix of your thoughts and feelings and they affect everything around you. At the same time you are also receiving and translating the vibrations of everything around you (which can, in turn, affect your vibration by how you react to them). Now that we understand vibration, let's look at how it interacts with the law of attraction.
Law of Attraction
The law of attraction, simply put, means energy attracts like energy. You may also have heard it expressed as "like attracts like', "that which is like unto itself is drawn" and even "thoughts become things".
The law of attraction is at work in your life every minute of every day. Your vibrations are constantly being broadcast to, and received, by the universe. This activates the law of attraction which then matches your vibrations and attracts to you similar vibrations in the form of people, things and situations in your life. In other words you are always creating your life through your thoughts and feelings. The conditions in your life, whether they are what you want or not, are always a match to your dominant vibrations.
The law of attraction, like all the universal laws, operates whether you are aware of it or not, or believe it or not. The often-used terms "what you focus on grows", "careful what you wish for (cause you just might get it)", "birds of a feather flock together" and "you can't get enough of what you don't want" are all examples of ways that we describe the law of attraction in action.
So, the question becomes - if your life is not how you would wish it to be, how do you change it? And the answer most often given by law of attraction and personal development teachers is a simple one - change your thoughts.
Simple - yes, but not easy. Here's why.
Somewhere between 94 - 98% of all thoughts are subconscious, that is, below or out of conscious awareness which means that only 2 - 6% of your thoughts are ever conscious. So, even if you managed to change all of your conscious thoughts to be positive, that still leaves an awful lot of subconscious thought, at least some of which would be negative, vibrating away in the background without you even being aware of it! If you're having trouble creating what you want in life, chances are your subconscious mind is at fault.
In our next article we will explore the subconscious mind and how it can interfere with your Law of Attraction efforts.

Applying The Law of Attraction - Taking The Reigns
Applying the law of attraction is the result of studying it. The more honest you are with yourself and the more you understand it, the easier it becomes, and then applying the law of attraction occurs naturally. In essence, applying the law of attraction is a lot like overcoming a phobia. Depending on your situation, at times, it may feel terrifying to face the truth. Yet you will overcome this feeling and replace it with overwhelming joy and confidence. Applying the law of attraction takes work and dedication, as well as patience and honesty. You must be willing to face all of your faults and failures and to forgive past angers and resentments. Finally, applying the law of attraction requires that you change the way you use your emotions. We do this through our thoughts, and though it may seem difficult at first, with practice you will see just how simple and powerful this divine shift in your consciousness, really is.
To illustrate how applying the law of attraction works, think of riding a bike over a ramp off the edge of a cliff with a parachute on your back. This is either a terrifying thought(terror being the emotion attached to the thought) or an exciting thought. Why would someone do this? The answer is because for them, the feeling of exhilaration over-rides the feeling of terror. The simple shift in what they focus their thoughts on determines the emotions they feel which determines the event that takes place. The person "feels" the rush of excitement as a wave over their consciousness before ever getting on the bike, they live the feeling in their mind first through their thoughts and feelings. In this way, applying the law of attraction enables them to do what many people will not.
When you first learn the art of applying the law of attraction into your life, it is always best to observe for yourself how seamlessly your moods transition into and out of each other. Some people like to create a "mood log" where they simply record on a pocket notepad what their mood is currently. Each time they notice a mood change they record it along with what they feel caused the mood shift. This easy technique is great for beginners to illustrate the power of moods and "feelings" in their lives. For it will become evident in a few days of this record keeping just how much power your feelings have and subsequently, how careless most people are in who and what they "allow" to change the way they feel. If you've ever had a bad day you can really identify with this concept. For most people a great day can be "ruined" by a single non-desired event. It can be as simple and insignificant as someone leaving the toilet seat up or taking your parking space. Bam! just like that our feelings shift to anger and our good mood slides into a bad mood. Which can only lead, by virtue of the law of attraction, to more events in your day that will "harmonize" with your mood.
Applying the law of attraction is understanding that each and every one of our feelings are signals to the universe. The only job of the universe is to respond to these signals by giving out what it has received. So if you are feeling angry then surely more things that will make you feel angry will follow because that is the signal you sent! This applies to every possible emotion dealing with every facet of human interest including money, health, relationships, you name it.
Spend a few days creating a mood log. Look back at your results at the end of the week and observe the best and worse moods you had throughout this exercise. Write down on another piece of paper which of these moods you would prefer to feel all of the time. Go through your log and categorize good moods from bad moods. Identify what events changed your mood from good to bad. Now spend some time re-creating those events in your mind. Go back there mentally and find a way to preserve your good mood despite the bad event. This is one of the secrets to applying the law of attraction. Learning how to guard the positive feelings you create within yourself despite what the outside world throws at you. When you have mastered this technique you have fully understood that you are not a victim of the world at the mercy of circumstance. Because you have the choice and the power in every moment of your day to choose how you feel and in turn, what you attract!
Applying the law of attraction is controlling how you feel. As a child cries because it does not want to put forth the effort to do something within their capability, so do people use their emotions to gain the attention of a "higher power" or others to do what they do not want to do. This correlation is staggeringly correct and we have all been guilty of these "emotional temper tantrums" at some point(s) in our lives. Applying the law of attraction, then, is growing and maturing as an emotional creature. Understanding the fact that whatever we feel we attract, it becomes evident just how precious our thoughts and feelings are. They can be used consciously as tools for creation or unconsciously as weapons for destruction. It is therefore your job to harness this power within yourself and it begins with learning how to feel good, no matter what.
Another great technique in applying the law of attraction is simply to feel grateful. Some people are so used to feeling bad it is hard to feel good about anything. In this case applying the law of attraction begins with feeling thankful for each and every thing that is positive in their life. This can be as small as being able to breathe. The important thing is to FEEL how good it is to be able to breathe. Learn how to FEEL the feelings of gratefulness and you will teach yourself how to feel good.
Make a list of everything you are grateful for. Spend some time and come up with the top ten things you are grateful for that elicit the strongest feeling of love within you. Tape this list to the mirror you use most often. Every time you use the mirror begin by mentally going through this list from top to bottom. Take the time and spend the energy to actually FEEL the feelings of gratefulness and how thankful you are to have these things. This shouldn't take longer than 5-10 minutes and it is an amazingly powerful technique in applying the law of attraction. It works because it builds the habit of seeing through the negative into what is most important, that which you care about!
By focusing on what you care most for and those feelings of love and gratefulness, you attract more of what you love back. It is always better to spend your emotional energy on what you want over what you don't want! Try it for yourself and take on an "attitude of gratitude". You'll soon learn just how powerful those two magic words of, thank you, really are!
The techniques for applying the law of attraction are as diverse as the people who use them. With some thought you will come up with your own unique methods which work for you personally. The bottom line here is that applying the law of attraction is learning the ways to feel good in your life and then guarding those feelings as you guard your wallet or purse. By becoming aware of your moods and feelings you can use your thoughts in applying the law of attraction. We have direct control over our thoughts. Even if something negative happens to us, we still have control.
It takes effort in applying the law of attraction to choose not to react to something negative with a negative feeling. But that is what applying the law of attraction is, taking responsibility for our emotions. You are an adult learning how to become an emotional adult and it is not easy. It is simple but takes work. It does, however, get easier and in fact eventually becomes habit.
When applying the law of attraction becomes habit is when life really begins to flourish for you! When you have the confidence to face the day knowing nothing can make you feel bad because you simply won't allow it too. When you feel great simply because you decided to fix you thoughts on something you love and hold onto that feeling all day. When you decide to let go of past hatreds and jealousies because you know those negative feelings will only come back to you as negative circumstances, instead choosing to feel how grateful you are for what you already have. THAT is when applying the law of attraction is fun! THAT is when applying the law of attraction is exciting! THAT is when applying the law of attraction really begins to work and manifest in your life!
